Statewide Health Improvement Partnership

Benton County received a Minnesota Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) grant, formally known as Statewide Health Improvement Program, from the Minnesota Department of Health for fiscal years of 2016-2021. The 5 year grant is on a two year funding cycle. The amount awarded to each grantee is decided each biennium. Grantees use SHIP funds to make local investments that assist community members to make healthier decisions in their everyday lives through policy, systems and environmental changes.

Benton County has received SHIP funding during the first, third, and fourth grant cycles (2010-2011 & 2014-2015 & 2016-2021), but not during the 2012-2013 grant cycle when funding was awarded through a competitive process. However, the short break in work has not hindered Benton County SHIP from making strides in their work. Benton County SHIP makes use of all the benefits that come from the small-town atmosphere of the county.

The small-town feel has made it easier for the SHIP staff and the Community Leadership Team to get the word out about opportunities and connect with new partner sites. People are neighborly and eager to help support health improvements in the community. A major goal of recent work has been to continue the supportive relationships that SHIP has created in Benton County, reducing silos between organizations, and connecting partners with the resources they need to achieve their goals.
