Key Responsibilities

The Sheriff, as chief county law enforcement officer, is responsible for all law enforcement activities to include but not limited to: investigation of felonies committed within the county, transportation of prisoners through the court system, apprehension and confinement of all mental and chemical dependent patients, housing and maintaining prisoners in the county jail, search and rescue operations within the county, serving all civil actions and notices, collection of delinquent taxes and other processes as required by law to be served or posted on behalf of the state or county.


The Benton County Sheriff's Office employs 78 people including 28 licensed peace officers and seven public safety dispatchers. In addition there are up to 20 members of the mounted patrol, 10 Reserve Deputy members and 5 non-licensed part-time employees available for special duties; including fair security and rescue. The 8 public safety dispatchers field all E911 center calls for Benton County, the Police Departments for Rice and Sauk Rapids and the Foley, Rice and Sauk Rapids Fire Departments. The jail can house up to 102 inmates. Other major functions include Water Patrol, Snow Patrol, Mounted Patrol and the Special Response Team (SRT).
