Open Houses for Local Option Sales Tax

Benton County will hold two open houses to share information and answer questions about a proposed local option sales tax for transportation. Open houses will be held on Tuesday, April 9th at 6:30 p.m. in the City of Sauk Rapids Government Center Community Room, and on April 22nd at 6:30 p.m. in the County Board Room in Foley. County Board members and County engineering staff will be on hand to discuss projects that can be funded from a local option sales tax. Benton County has proposed a one-half percent sales tax for County transportation projects, which equates to 50 cents on a $100 taxable purchase. Minnesota counties were granted the ability to establish a local option sales tax for transportation in 2013 by the State Legislature. A local option sales tax can be assessed by resolution of the County Board after a public hearing. According to the Association of Minnesota Counties, 44 counties have established a local option sales tax for transportation as of February 2019.
